Freeform
Skam, Quatermass
London, UK
You could say that Simon Pyke's debut album as Freeform, "Electric Speakers" on Worm Interface in 1995, catapulted him instantaneously into the spotlight. Soon afterward he found himself touring the UK with Autechre and with a single on Skam records ("Free") that would later be sampled by Howie B for a U2 number one single ("Discotheque"). Since that time Freeform has released albums on Headphone, Quatermass, Sprawl, and Warp and has been hailed by the media as inventive, exotic, and otherwolrdly.
During a two-month tour of Asia in 2001, Pyke collected sounds and instruments used on his most recent two releases “Audiotourism, Vietnam & China” (Quatermass) and "Human" (Skam). "Audiotourism" was followed by a second album with mixes from Bill Laswell, Atom tm, Autechre and others. A compilation of Freeform material, "Freeform Condensed", is scheduled to be released on Bernd Friedman’s label Nonplace in March.
